I am trying to set-up send mail on a Redhat 7.2 box, sendmail is installed and running (I can telnet to its IP address from an external address on port 25 I need to set-up four users so that they can receive e-mail for a specific domain which is not the main domain for which this server is on (its currently running DNS for the company I work for)

can anyone give me some help in getting this set-up ?

thanks MCSE,MCSA,MCP+i,MCP

Hey

You need to edit the sendmail.cf file. Do a search on googel.com and look up sendmail relaying. Or you can go to the sendmail website:
Good Luck

:) Keep it real!

OK, exactly on what step are you looking for a solution.
1) Adding the mail users
2) Setting up the POP3 server
3) Adding virtual domains.

Pretty much all three I am using Redhat 7.1 but will most likely upgrade to version 8.0 today I know Sendmail is up and running as far as telneting to the server on Port 25 but if I try to connect using Outlook Express it fails. This I have traced to not having imap installed which again I will do today.

I need to know how to add users ( I thought it was as simple as using the useradd command but I get an error message back saying unknown commmand. I also need to know where to tell the server which domain it will be receiving e-mail for.

Situation is we have a broadband connection and provide our own DNS so and authoritive for the domain I want to receive mail for. I have edited the DNS record to add an MX record which points all mail for my domain to this server. MCSE,MCSA,MCP+i,MCP

There is a sendmail forum on tek-tips forum14 if you want any specific help :)

For the useradd command, it may be located either in /usr/sbin or /usr/bin.
If you can not locate in neither of them issue this command and located the exact path of useradd command and go into that folder then run it from there,
# find -name useradd

A missing useradd command is weird other than else.

For the domain question, Add your domains to /etc/mail/local-host-names file as well as /etc/hosts file. One domain per line. Then restart the xinetd deamon, to let the configuration reread
# /etc/init.d/xinetd restart

should you have any problems installing imap or pop3 , reply back.

well I now have imap installed but when I try to connect with outlook express it bombs out

I have upgraded to 7.3 and havd KDE running, when in there I am able to send mails out with the correct name IE %username@mydomainname.com

how do you enable allowing outlook or any other pop3 client to recevie the e-mail ? MCSE,MCSA,MCP+i,MCP

as a root user, type setup
goto services
make sure anything that related to imap, smpd, pop3 are checked
then you restart the system
see what happens ...

ok here is the deal now, and quite s strange one it is...

I have a domain, my surname.com

at work we have a DNS server which acts as the DNS server for my domain

I now have sendmail & ipop3 started, I can connect from my PC at home to the Linux sendmail box at work to collect my mail (this server also acts as DNS for my domain & work

at work I can open Outlook and send mail to myfirstname@mysurname.com & the linux box receives ok

NOTE: the internal DNS servre at work uses the DNS server that hosts my e-mail as a smart host IE if it cannot resolve a domain name it asks this server first.

I can send e-mail out from this server using outlook at home or an e-mail cleint in the linux box its self.

If I perform a nslookup I can resolve mysurname.com at retrieve its MX record correctly regardless of where I am.

I cvan telnet on port 25 to this server and send a mail to myself from any domain I care to invent.

Have to say I am now struggling to find a solution to this

HELP !!! MCSE,MCSA,MCP+i,MCP

Hmmm one more test and if I try to send from home I get No transport provider was available for delivery to this

this would suggest somewhere that I am not allowed to send because of where I am sending from ????? bearing in mind I can send from my network at home ? MCSE,MCSA,MCP+i,MCP
