During the RNext beta phase I setup an SMTP Notes server. Despite having the anti-relay code enabled someone managed to use my server to SPAM
My solution to this was to only accept incoming E-mail connections from a friends server who was running a great deal of anti-SPAM code. I also disabled my server's ability to send mail to the 'net and am primarily using it to archive mailing lists.
My friend is taking down his mail server and is no longer able to screen mail for me. I've modified the MX record and removed his IP address from the configuration document. The server refuses incoming mail connections. I have tried a variety of settings in the configuration document and have gotten so far as to now not even get error messages - it simply reports 0 messages delivered! I had been getting a message to the effect that I was rejecting mail because the server wasn't allowed. "Rejected for policy reasons"
In desperation I've even deleted the configuration document and tried to recreate it from scratch - no go. I'm at my witts end here and would appreciate some help. I'm not new to Notes but am not used to working with SMTP mail. I'd like to simply receive mail without allowing SPAM mongers to relay through my server. IF I can do this and also be able to send mail occasionally that would be a bonus
I've found documents that attempt to explain the various SMTP Inbound Controls - which is where I feel my problem lies - but they're not clear enough for me. For instance it will say "none" means all - do they want the word "none" in the field? Seems silly but blank doesn't seem to work (sigh). A kindergarten description of what I ought to be using would help. I've tried leaving nearly everything blank and turned off, still no go. The server has been recyled many times and the router recyled and updated too - no change.
I'm stuck, I'm frustrated, and I'm probably going to be dropped from a list or two if I've not got this solved anytime soon. With the previous SPAM relay on my machine even with protections supposedly in place I'm tempted to drop trying to use Notes for this at all. Having used it since early R2 that really hurts but Lotus did NOT make this SMTP stuff clear at all IMO....
