We will soon be upgrading from 4.11 to 6, the idea is to just "move" our queue based printers for now, and roll out I-Printing after when we have more time (we have 160 network printers).

In trying to test the Queue based printing on our test system, I don't see any print queue objects, or print server objects. Netware 6 manuals do not cover print queues... any idea where I can find documentation on setting up print queues within Netware 6?

Novell really would like you to use NDPS with NW6. We have been experimenting with moving the queues here with mixed success. There is a utility on Novell's cool solution page that purports to move the queues easily. We're still testing it.

You'll probably need to recreate at least some of the queues in console One or nwadmin.

If you don't have 500 queues, I think I'd bite the bullet and go to NDPS.

To help queues migrate make sure that the printers are not attached to the server when the migration happens. The queue based printing does work, sometimes you have to kick it to get it to work on newer version of DS. You will have to do everything for queue based printing in NWAdmin32, no queue admin functions are in ConsoleOne or iManage. Everthing is basicly the same as it was in NW4.

But if you want better functionality, bite the bullet as Beaghler suggested. You can save your self a lot of time and pain by just going half way on the NDPS imp. You can create all of your NDPS printer objects to service queues. So you can leave your clients alone and get the server side up on NDPS. Going this way may be a lot easier than messing around with JetAdmin to troubleshoot the printers that have reattach issues (old printers should be expected).

For NDPS compatiblity; anything older than and HP 4 (including other brands) will have problems and may not work. Anything made around the HP4 LJ days may or may not work; hard to say. Anything HP 5 and above work like a charm. Lexmark can be a pain, Xerox is pretty neat, and the Novell gateway works with just about anything (you just don't get any added features of the printer managment others give). Just did this in a number of locations. If you are using JetDirects, make sure the firmware is updated - Web JetAdmin will do this. As mentioned above, setup NDPS and then attach the existing Queues to the NDPS objects. In some instances I had to recreate the queues to do it. Didn't have to do anything at the workstations. New workstations point to the NDPS printers, old workstations still point to the queues.
