For Exchange 5.5 You can only use POP3 for individual mailboxes to collect mail without 3rd party add-ons
Basically SMTP is a 'Push' operation where the sending server has to be able to find the receiving client. This is where MX records fit into DNS. And POP3 is a 'Pull' operation where the client has to know where the post is stored to be able to collect it. The best analogy is, SMTP is your mailman who every delivery shoves a lot of letters through your door or into your mailbox and POP is you going to the mailbox or picking them up from the doormat.
I have just configured an exchange 5.5 with POP3 cabaility for my client. Exchange serve has an inbuild ability to support POP3 mail delivery. The only thing that you should be aware of is whether you have enabled the POP3 protocol on site level and then on server or at last on mail box level. so set them independently so that you can stop support on a site or give POP3 support on a site but to a specific server and at last on that specific server to a specific mail box.
You can check whether your exchange server is accepting POP3 connections by using telnet. use the following command to connect to your exchange server.
from any windows machine
Telnet (server hostname or IP address) 110
>>> it will give you a response something like.
+OK Microsoft Exchange POP3 server version 5.5.2651.76 ready
>>> write the following commands to get to a mail box and see whether you can connect to a mail box. user NT-domainname/NT-account-name/mailbox alias pass password for NTaccount
Note that if you just write the mailbox alias the Exchange assumes that the NT account as the same name. so be care there. if you have the same alias as NT account than you can skip the account name.
There is another issue with POP3. i have asked in the forum but was unable to get a satisfatory answer however i have now found an answer i would like to share it with you. I was trying to connect to my Exchange server through a POP3 client and i was getting an error which i am copying below.
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: ' alias on Server ', Server: ' server ', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.', Port 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
I tried everything but i was unable to solve the problem. Eventually i found something in Technet(Q298944). The problem is with anti virus software. I was using Mcafee Net Sheild 4.5 on my exchange server and it was block my ports so i uninstalled the antivirus rebooted the server and boom i was there right into the exchange through the POP3 client.
Hi, on the subject of POP3, which I had to enable on our servers recently for a couple of mailboxes that needed it. However, whenever I create a new mailbox, it enables the POP3 protocol by default. Is there a way for a new mailbox to have the protocol disabled by default?
Thanks in advance
In response to richardo, their is a way that you can disable a protocal for a user. Double click the mailbox and go to protocol tab. Chooose the protocal that you want to diable and click the settings button. In the protocal details take the tick of the enable potocol command.
By the way thanks to the chaps who showed me how to get POP3 working, works a treat gents.
Hey well try this. Create a user template and disable POP3 protocol support in that account. When creating a new user duplicate this account and i think you will get around the problem. Best of luck.
I have met a problem now. That is i can't send out external mails but can still retrieve all mails. I don't why. An error message will appear everytime i attempted to send out mails.
I am logged into a LAN taht has an internet gateway and using ADSL to get to another internet service provider and attempt to send e-mail through that ISP's SMtp gateway.
The error message is like:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'someone@microsoft.com>'. Subject: '<Test>', Account: '<Test>', Server:'<smtp.microsoft.com>', protocol: SMTP, ServerResponse: '550<someone@microsoft.com>.... Relaying is prohibited', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
I don't really know much about email or email protocols so forgive me if I silly here.
As I've been following this thread and I was wondering why someone would setup/use POP3 with SMTP or instead of. What are the advantages of POP3? Is it quicker? Will it save room on the server? etc...
Hi Beeling,
Well it looks like a striaght farward case of prohabiting mail relaying. What is happening in your case is that the SMTP server that you are using is configured to prohibit relay or forward your mail to the SMTP server that has your mail box. I will give you an example of whats happening. Think of the 2 SMTP servers as Post Offices. Now you are suppose to receive mail directly through PostOffice1 which is your SMTP server Hosting your mail box. However you are configured to use PostOffice2 which is with another SMTP Server Which i gather is with another ISP. Administrator of the Postoffice2 has made a rule that they will not farward any mail to POSTOFFICE1. So when ever you receive mail it happens so because the postman from Postoffice1 directly drops it into your mailbox however incase of sending mail you are using this other POSTOFFICE which has the rule of not forwarding the mail to another postoffice and hence you are getting the problem. There can be 2 solutions here either ask that ISP to enable mail relaying for your particular SMTP Server or connect directly with your SMTP server without this intermidiate SMTP server. Now why people prohibit mail relaying because if your mail server is open to it anyone can send out mails using you mail server which will appear to come from your server, resulting in execcess load on your server and also creatng legal problems if that someone is using your mailsever to send out objectionable material.
And now MRsJONES.
the difference between POP3 and SMTP. No they are not fast or slow they are completely different from each other performing differnt task. SMTP stands for Smiple Mail Transfer Protocol. It acts like a Post office with a large number of Post Boxes( your Mail boxes) It receive the mail on your behalf and stores them in your particular mail box or post box and thats it. Well not exactly buts thats most of it.
Now you need to collect this mail from your Post box right so you need a vehicle to take you their so that you can POP there and collect all your mail and bring it home( your computer) and read it at liesure. This vehicle is POP3 Thats the Post Office Protocol which just connects to the SMTP server and collects all the mails and brings them to your system. the 3 in POP3 refres to its version. There is other protocols like POP3 its called IMAP4 Internet Mail Access Protocol and 4 is the version. It does the same thing but has a few more extras in it. However its not as widely used as POP3.
