hello there

I've step up a client-server DB using MS Access as front end and Sql Server Database as back-end at my work place, I was successful in connecting to the sql server locally within the private network but now I need to make MS access connect remotely to the sql server through the internet.

I've done my fair share of research. I understand all the risks but this is a test database and its very small. I've already configured the firewall and the things that need to be done on sql management studio. I found that I need a Public IP address to connect remotely and also to forward the port on the router. I have no Idea how I connect to the internet and all I know is that my company uses a proxy server. I need to speak with the IT department regarding this and I don't want to look dumb while doing that. How should I explain this to the IT department in a more technical way?? or is the way I've written here will do?

thanks in advance,

Danny

From your question, I am going to assume you are not part of the IT department where you work. When you do go to your Network or Firewall guys, they will not really hear "This is a test database" or "This is very small". For them, there is only a production network. Besides which, if the tests go well, what happens then?

They may want to have this SQL Server hosted in a DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) section of the network, so if it gets compromised, the damage it can do will be limited.

You will probably spend more time trying to quantify the benefits of opening the Firewall to this server, as the risks (as you certainly have found out) are very well known indeed.
