The usage on one of our win2k3 servers is fluctuating quite a bit and i need to have the server notify me when the disk space reaches a certain threshold.

Currently i have created 2 alerts under performance > Alerts for each of the Logical drives to send a network message to (then i entered my computer BIOS name in here)

IS that correct? I dont get any Alerter messages, and the alerter service is running? Not sure what im doing wrong here.

Is there anyway to configure the server to email me these alerts? This seems like a really crude way to setup a basic alert, i just need to be able to know whats going on with my hard drive space without constantly logging into check!

thanks.

You probably need to start the messenger service on your pc, by default on XP is disabled and might need to enable it on the server also. I use a program called ServersAlive to monitoring and emailing notifications works good.

I am checking into the ServersAlive software now. Looks pretty good.

You were right. my XP workstation did have the Messenger service disabled. This was the problem.

Thanks! Heres a star for your post!

That solved the problem about the messenger service, but what about having this alert emailed to me.

Is this in anyway integrated with Windows 2003 server, or do you have to use 3rd party software like "ServersAlive" to do this?

I am not sure if windows 2000 or 2003 has native support for emailing alerts, ive always used 3rd party software for such monitoring and notification.

You could write a script to monitor the event logs, one that triggers an email program to send a message to you if a particular event id should pop up, and setup a scheduled tasks to run the script (say...every 15 minutes). A free email program that comes in mind is BLAT. Do a search on it.

On the other hand, there is MS software that can monitor these events continuously and send notifications to a user or group of user. It's called Microsoft Operations Manager. But, that's a whole 'nother implementation$$.

I hope you find this post helpful,
