Setting up IP based print queues in Aix 4.2 1

In attempting to set up a print queue using SMIT, I've set up the print server ip address in the /etc/hosts file. Then I've gone to add the print queue, using the same ip address in the hostname of the remote server (it's an HP Jetdirect attached to an HP Laserjet5). I've used the network name of the print queue as the Name of the queue on the remote server.

It errors out at the mkque command in the script as unable to find the host, yet I can ping the ip address from the server (an IBM Powerserver 320H)

I'm not an AIX administrator, and am doing this from documentation I've found on the net...what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your help!

I assume this is the document you are looking at?

You are sure you are doing /etc/hosts and do not have an /etc/resolve.conf file?

And have you tried to telnet to the port
# telnet 150.1.1.4 9100
Trying...
Connected to 150.1.1.4.
Escape character is '^]'.
Hey guys, this is going to print!!!
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.

the port 9100 is the port on the hpjet card....

Add a Print Queue
Type or select values in entry fields.
Press Enter AFTER making all desired changes.

[Entry Fields]
Description Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5Si/5Si
MX
Names of NEW print queues to add
PCL [hp5pcl]
PostScript []
HP-GL/2 []
Printer connection characteristics
* HOSTNAME of the JetDirect Card [hpprt3.aix.dfw.ibm.com]
* PORT [9100]
------------------------------------------
the hostname is exactly as you have it in the host file.....?The hostname for
the printer hpprt3.aix.dfw.ibm.com should already be in the /etc/hosts file
or in the DNS server.

The PORT value should be 9100 for normal HP JetDirect printers, and 9101 for HP JetDirect EX3 port 2, and 9102 for port 3.

*just make sure that each node is in /etc/hosts (names and IPs) and printers configured as network prt.

*if you've done such changes, and you think it's still the same, try re-booting the system or try command cfgmgr to re-read system devices.

goodluck!

From what I read out of your post you are putting the ip address into the 'hostname of the remote server' box in smit. Try just placing the hostname which you created in the host file instead of the ip.

Hope that works!

Thanks for all your help. I had not found the document aixqueen referenced at the IBM site. I went there and downloaded the reference.

The only problem is that even though we're on 4.2, it appears that not all modules were installed since when I ran smitty mkpq I did not get a listing that included the JetDirect option.

So taking johny2001 advice I went and edited the hosts file to reference the hostname and ip address, then went to the add printer queue function and referenced the hostname I had added to hosts and not the ip address. Aside from having to shorten the name of the queue on the remote server (I used the print queue name our network folks had given the jetdirect), it appeared to have taken the input and added the queue.

Now I just have to get our application vendor to tie the queue to his application print function.

THANKS for all your help.

Now...whaddya all know about bellmail errors?

If you were looking for the driver for the hpjetdirect card..
You can go into smitty install
install and update from all available (not latest or anything)
do a search for printers.hpJetDirect.attach
That is the fileset name....
(take note of the lower and upper case letters letters)

You don't really mean bell mail right?

Your bell mail errors could be due to a missing /var/spool/mail/root file or incorrect permissions. Should like something like:

-rw-rw---- 1 root mail 11927 25 Jun 09:40 /var/spool/mail/root

Thanks all for all your help. I'm close, but no cigar yet. I think my problem is that the 4.2 I have was not installed with all options. When I went to the add queue section, there was no option for JetDirect...I blazed ahead and set up a queue as a remote, and it was added...but of course while the system sees the jetdirect, I haven't established a print queue through the jet direct. Does anyone know if this can be done without going through smit.....maybe at the command line level?
