I'm just setting up a new win2k server for a LAN of about 30 computers.

At the moment each PC has a static IP of 100.100.100.xx with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Is this acceptable or do I need an address like 192.168.1.xx

I don't know alot about which ranges of IP addresses mean what, I've just be chucked into the deep end to get this working.

The computers on the network use an internet connection through a proxy connected to a modem on a computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The reason that addresses like 192.168.x.x and 10.10.x.x are popular is that they are set aside so no one will make a real server on the internet with that address.

If you use 100.100.x.x as your local addresses you run the risk of missing some web pages which are actually at 100.100.x.x, since your router will see those as 'local' addresses, none of your users can ever get to those pages. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Why would a company with 30 computers and Win2K Server not hire someone who knows something about networking? Even for a short contract period? Cheap or stupid, I guess.

Setup your Win2K Server to use DHCP and all clients should be setup to use DHCP as well.

DHCP would be the best solution. You can setup a static ip's as well.

Use 192.168.1.1 for a server subnet 255.255.255.0

Use 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.31 for your PC's
subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”
