Hello to all.

I am trying to setup my own email server with MS SBS 2003. I have had some limited success, but still can't receive pop3 mail. ie (internet mail)my request is this, can someone please offer a 'to-do list' or checklist of how to/what to check off. I haven't been able to find anything so far on the net...etc. (hosting your own internet email)

Briefly, here is what i've done so far already:

1. registered domain name: (mx record pointing to my domain)
2. installed MS SBS 2003 Standard Edition
3. enabled pop3 service which is disabled by default
4. configured outlook 2003 client with username and password of my local administrator account.

5. i haven't configured exchange with external dns servers as such, but am using forwarders in dns management to forward requests to my isp

i know this is probably not enough configuration done, but just gives you an idea where i'm going i guess.

hardware/software setup:
MS SBS 2003 Standard Edition
installed on pc with 2 nics, i called them internal and external (int=192.168.16.2: ext=192.168.16.10)this was set default by SBS on installation.
one nic has netgear router for internet, the other just into my switch, then both linked into each other.(router and switch i mean)

I would appreciate any comments, url's,suggestions on this topic, as i need to get this done soon for a site...etc

p.s
Just a quick question in case someone feels like expanding on this subject:?

pop3 = protocol to receive email and is supported in exchange (correct ?)

smtp = protocol to send internet email (correct ?)

pop3 is supported, but since you use an MX, you don't need it.
smtp is to send, yes.

Check your server with the Telnet tool to see if it is accesible

Please, may I suggest you do a LOT of reading before you attempt anything like this.

Marc
