Hi, not sure this is the right forum for this, but I hope you can help anyway!

I've just installed a LAN at home. It's quite simple, just a cable modem for the internet, going into a Linksys 4 port router, which has two PC's connected to. It's all working like a dream, and we share the internet no problem, and I've even set up sharing so I can map the drive of one of the PC's onto the other to share storage. Now here's the question:

I'd like to set up one of the machines as a web server serving pages onto the internet, but I'm not sure this is actually possible. The cable modem has our ISP assigned IP address which is then used by the router. So the PC's connected to the router all have 192.168.xxx.xxx IP's. Obviously these are the reserved range which aren't actually accessible from outside the LAN. So can I set up one of the PC's as a webserver with it's own IP that will be accessible from outside via the cable modem and router?! If so how?!

Thanks a lot!

It's quite easy. First, you may want to find out if your ISP will allow it (most don't) and if they block port 80 (many do). Anyway, in a nutshell, you assign your server a static IP outside the dhcp range of the router (like 192.168.1.10). Then in the router forwarding section, forward port 80 to the private server IP addres. For more details about how to run a server visit

just to add you might want to also forward port 8080 just in case

Thanks a lot! Got it all up and running like a dream now! Cheers guys, have a star each!

i set
port forward
10 - 5631
and
80 - 80

but the only one that shows as open is 5631

what am i doing wrong ??
i needed netmeeting plus video stream on 80
thanks gang for any help

Disable 'block wan request' and SPI (if you have an old firmware - it's removed from recent ones).

Wondering if someone could help me. I had a webserver running on the same setup (linksys 4 port router). Everything was working fine until I had to release and renew.

The internet and everything is working fine on the computer with the webserver and the webserver works fine locally, however when I try connecting via the internet on another computer the website cant be displayed.

Im pretty sure my ISP allows me to run one as I have been hosting it for awhile now. Add to that my FTP connection isnt working either so I have a feeling its a problem with my router settings or with my Windows 2000 Prof (the one hosting the webserver).

Anyone have any ideas as to why this isnt working for me anymore?

You released and renewed the router's WAN (public) IP address? Is your router automatically obtaining a DHCP address from your ISP?

How are you trying to connect from the internet? - by a domain name or by the IP address assigned from your ISP. If the release/renew assigned a new IP address you need to connect to the new IP address (or if using a domain name you need to update your DNS records).

have you checked on the WAN IP of your router after you renewed?? Is it the same as before you renewed???
If the WAN IP changed that is causing the problem.
