Hi There

I am having problems with getting a host connected to my PIX501 to access the Internet. The PIX501 is connected via the 'outside' ethernet port to a D link 504 router/switch using a straight through cable. The dhcp client is enabled on the outside interface of the pix and has has picked up an ip adress of 192.168.0.2 from the D-Link dhcp server. The dhcp server is running on the internal side of the pix (192.168.1.1/24) and has allocated ip address 192.168.1.2 to my host. The host cannot access any addresses outside of the PIX apart from the D-Link config GUI 192.168.0.1. The DSL connection is definitely up and running !!! The PIX is brand new out of the box and has not yet had any changes to the config as it is supposed to be configured with the common settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Smokey

More info...

I can ping the D-link router (192.168.0.1/24)from the PIX but I can't ping the PIX inside interface (192.168.1.1) from the D-link router. I have allowed ICMP echo & echo reply on the inside and outside intrfaces for any address but still no joy. I have added a static route to the D-link router for the 192.168.1.0/24 (Pix) network to no avail.

HI.

That's OK. By design.

Please post your current config.

Use syslog messages at level 4 (warning).
This will give you valuable info.
Use level 6 (informational) if you want more details for troubleshooting.

Running config shown below. As suggested I have used logging to console levels 4 & 6. When trying to ping from the host (192.168.1.2) to the D-link router (192.168.0.1), I could see a deny on the hosts outgoing ICMP packet in the console. Created a rule to allow any ICMP from the host to the outside any. Pinged the D-link router and noted a deny on the incoming packet from the D-link router ip address to the outside address of the PIX (192.168.0.2). Created another rule allowing any ICMP from the outside to the inside. Pinged the DSL router again from the host. This time there was no output in the console but the host timed out. I have removed the access rules mentioned above in the config posted below.

HI.

> static (inside,outside) 192.168.1.0 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 0 0
You should remove the above line.
It overrides your NAT/GLOBAL configuration, and prevents connectivity.

BTW - instead or in addition to testing with ping, try testing with TCP (telnet/ftp/http/smtp/pop3/etc).
The pix does stateful inspection for TCP (unlike ICMP), so you don't need to change any access rules for outbound connections to work.
