Hi All,

I am wanting to setup a Mail server for my home use. I currently have cable connection and running a windows 2k server with all service packs and security updates installed. With my cable connection I do have a static IP. But Im new at this mail server stuff and confused on exactly what needs to be done to set this up. If anyone can help out or have some good sites that may walk me through this, it would be much appreciated. I have a question about the DNS also. Will i have to use the Cable Co. DNS settings or can I just setup my server with my own DNS. If I need to post more info just let me know.

Thanks

You do have public IP through your cable modem, but you definately want to check with your ISP so the IP address does not change every other week. As far as DNS needs.. this could very well vary. I do not know if your ISP will set u up with DNS service where they will forward the MX record(DNS entry Needed for e-mail use) for your own domain name. Guess it wouldn't hurt to ask your ISP. You can run your own DNS, but this means additional IP or using port forwarding with maybe a router to host multi server with single static IP. For you e-mail server question, there are alot of e-mail server softwares out there for Windows. You might want to download different trial versions to find out which on fits your need. I know this info is not enuf to walk you through, but shows you that u need to do alot of playing around

I appreciate your response. My Cable Co. has given me a public IP, which they said they would not change it. I am also using a Linksys router which at this time I am running a Webserver and FTP setup with port forwarding. I will deff. check around for the software you mentioned and see what I can find. Again Thanks, for the response.
