Setting up a file server...'everyone' isn't allowing everyone access

I'm setting up a file server and setting up various file and printer shares. This is not running as a DC...it's just another computer on the computer lab network that is running Server 2003. Also note that all the workstations are running WinXP Home (yea,.i know).

The problem is that when I create a folder/printer share with 'everyone' given access to the resource, none of the PCs can access the resource.

Seems odd. What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't a share with 'everyone' grant everyone access? I know that a simple share under Win XP Pro would allow it but then you have the 5 user limit...I have more than that hence the need for Windows Server.

TIA

Check your NTFS permissions, as they override share permissions.

errr...I'm assuming you mean the security settings on the folders/printers.

What I read elsewhere and tried to do is go in and add 'guest' to the share permission area and then edit the security on the folders and added 'guest' to them as well with the same set of permissions as the share but that doesn't seem to be working.

Any additional instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Is the guest account enabled on that server? Stupid question, I know, but it's usually the little crap that bites ya...

Yes, the security tab is where the NTFS permissions are defined. When comparing these with Share permissions, most restrictive wins.

Is the guest account enabled on that server?"

Good question. Most likely not. However, I don't see the usual "User accounts" or "Computers and Users" icons in control panel or Administrative Tools to enable the account.

Any idea what to launch to get to the user manager while in file server mode?

TIA
