I have been asked to help out our Microsoft Department in setting up a dedicated email server. They overloaded our company MS Exchange Server, then tried a separate stand alone MS Exchange Server but could only manage 9,000 11KB messages/hour. Their target is 80,000 11KB message/hour, or 1,000,000 11KB messages in a 13 hour window.

I have been asked to set up a dedicated SunOS 2.6 mail server and was wondering what kind of results I might expect from using Sendmail SMTP. My only experience in this area is that I have set up Sendmail as a SMTP relay only to a MS Exchange Server.

SunOS 5.6 sun4u sparc,Ultra-2 Memory size: 128 Megabytes NumCPU=1 200MHz

The box will have access to a Dual T1.

Does this kind of throughput seem reasonable? And If so, are there any suggestions for configuring the sendmail or OS?
