I'm a green toad to Baystack. I just started working for this company that is networked NT4 with win98 wks using flowpoint router with a Baystack 350. The company ordered another Baystack. The boss said connect the new Baystack (rj45)to the old baystack and power up. I looked at the manual. This company had never used the comm port to console and configure the first one. I told management that this will require carefullness.

The book says to Telnet. How can I do that if it has no ip address and I can't access the console interface? I've connected the new one to the BDC using a db cable.

Than I read it must (to connect two Baystacks)be crossed cabled. That both should have ip addresses. It just surprises me that the company has the flowpoint router running with its ip address and that this Baystack (first one)simply was powered up and the network rj45's cables inserted. It seemed that all was working as it should and that who ever managed the network before gave it no further thought.

I'm just struggling to do it right. Sorry the long note it just that both Baystacks sit there...no comm connectivity no console no ip address only power up on the first one and network connectivity (on the first one) and all just doesn't fit together as an orchestrated hardware environmnet. If I could be directed, advised, informed, I would defintely enhance my learning curve. Thanks for the help. Chu

Baystack 350 like most switches can be powered up and put onto a network but with out an I address is basically a "dumb" switch. Meaning you cannot configure it. I have several bays I run in the "dumb" mode. If you look in the manual you will see when you power it up loads a set of default configurations. In my case they met what I needed for a small site so I left them in the default mode. Hind site being 20/20 I wish I would have added an IP address but they work just fine. All switches newer switches need a crossover cable to hook two switches together. Not sure if this answered your question but let me know if I can help some other way

Yes. That's right. I did as your comments indicated. However, I did call Nortal...to get into the switch. Assessories..Hyper Terminal...which setups a connection using the comm port that will get one inside to than setup the IP address which will let you than use Telnet to monitor and administor the once privious dump hub. I'm still working on connecting contacting using hyperterminal to generate my interface. At least things are progressing. Thanks for the feedback. Good to keep these topics alive.

I am trying to console into my Bayswitch by going through the Comm port. What settings on my Hyper Terminal do I have to configure to sucessfully connect.

9600 8N1 ANSI or better yet auto config

two points: 1) Hyperterm acks like you are setting these values for the current session, but I find they take effect when I quit and restart hyperterm.

2) the cable for a Baystack is just a null modem adaptor away for the cable for cisco, 3Com, etc. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
