Hi guys, I need some suggestions on how to configure something. I have a 2wire 1800HW router which allows port forwarding per ip (i have 5 static) and the Linksys BEFSR41 does not. The 2wire doesn't send SNMP trap messages to my PC even though it gives the option to in the web interface. 2wire's tech support said they don't support it, and a reply to my post on DSLReports.com says it doesn't work on the 2wires. I've verified that it's not sending SNMP traps by using Ethereal to sniff packets on the computer the router is configured to send to.

This brings me to my question..

Can I use the Linksys router as the main router so all traffic routes through it so I can get the SNMP events? How would I configure each device? I want the Linksys for SNMP and the 2wire to manage port forwarding. I'm assuming I just allow all ports through the Linksys but I'm not sure if I can get this to work or if it's possible.

Thanks bcastner, I didn't find anything to help with snmp (since the router doesn't send the info) but it made me look at the router configuration again and I saw syslogs as an output option which I didn't see before. It looks like it gives me all the info I was wanting to get from SNMP so I'll just stick with this single router config and find a good compatible syslog parser or write my own.

I would be very surprised if you need to write this app yourself. I suspect that (certainly from broadbandreports) that this has been done already.

(I should state up front that I am an unabashed fan of and a site MVM) But I thought all of us on that forum had essentially belled the cat for statistics you want. Please search the discussions on the site.

bcastner,
I was lacking a parser for my 2wire not the Linksys :)

Anyways, I'll be working with the developer of Wall Watcher sending him sample logs so he can make his parser compatible. In the mean time, I already have a parser started and it's working for now. My main issue is resolve as I know have the data (connection attempts) I was looking for.

I kinda prefer having my own parser so I can do things I wouldn't be able to in others. Say for instance I could attempt to throw a text file on the common windows paths for "Desktop" of any remote PC attempting to connect to me over netbios. If the file makes it to their desktop, they'll have instructions on how to get rid of most viruses that replicate over netbios and recommendation of free AV software. I've used "net send" in the past to alert people of bugbear if their computer hit me on port 135 and they have messaging on so they can receive the message. I actually got some feedback saying thanks since I put my e-mail address in the message :p

Let me know how this issue sorts out for you.
Keith (author of Wallwatcher) is just a great guy. We are both MVMs at broadbandreports, and I have long admired his efforts for the user community.

Just great stuff.
