I've searched high and low and I can not find the registry setting that controls the timeout setting for reconnecting a network drive. What is it?

I somewhat recently saw a link to it here but I think the post has been archived (or I am not lucky enough to find it again).

Here's my situation... The company I work at uses Novell but only requires Windows login.... I rarely use Novell resources. I have a drive mapped to a Novell share. The problem arises when I am not logged into Novell and I attempt to use the open file dialog and it takes forever because it is trying to connect all the drives. I could technically drop the drive mapping or log on but I just want to change the timeout and be done.

Linney,

That absolutely is not my issue at all. That is a solution for persisting a drive connection that resolves. I want it to give up quickly when their is no (authenticated) connection to the share.

I was only hoping that if you searched in the Registry for some "timeout" setting that you might pick it up that way.

Any clues in here?

"Set the Name Resolution Timeout to 1 from the Default of 20.
I would also recommend pre-populating the "BadNameCache" with the names of the "Commonly Used Windows Servers" if you feel the tweak above is not sufficient."

linney,

Ironcially it was your response originally and your google search that turned it back up to me....

The body of the text where you set the session timeout to 60s or 60000.

I set it to 500 previously to resolve my issue (something ate the registry key)....

Just some notes on Service Timeouts.

To increase the timeout value in the registry, follow these steps:
Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
To change the value data for the ServicesPipeTimeout DWORD value to 60000 in the Control key, follow these steps:

Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSetClick the Control subkeyRight-click the ServicesPipeTimeout DWORD value, and then click Modify.Click Decimal.

Type 60000, and then click OK.
If the ServicesPipeTimeout value is not available, add the new DWORD value, and then set its value data to 60000 in the Control key.
To do so, follow these steps: Locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSetClick the Control subkey.

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

Type ServicesPipeTimeout, and then press ENTER.
Right-click the ServicesPipeTimeout DWORD value, and then click Modify.
Click Decimal.
Type a value of 60000, and then click OK.

The value is 60000 milliseconds and is equivalent to 60 seconds or to one minute.

Note This change does not take effect until the computer is restarted.

I figure if I am LAN connected, 500 ms is long enough or something is just broken anyway.

In an intersting twist of fate, the someone deleted the shared drive, I got annoyed and deleted my drive mapping and it will likely be days before the share is restored so I can do a proper test but this looks dead on familiar to me. Your persistance is definitely worth a star to me. Many thanks.

Keywords - 'cause I want to find this if I want to.

I'm glad you have found what you were searching for.
