This may be a lil too far-fetched, because its "industry Specific", but I hope someone can help anyway...

Im network admin for a 911 center.

We used to get our time (mission critical in Emergency Services) using the Us Navy servers on the internet, as many do. However, recently we have installed a GPS time server which we run internally. We have a GPS antenna on the roof, and a GPS time code converter, and 3 "TCI-NENA" boxes which convert the incoming timecode from coaxial cable (BNC), to serial ports.

I know that you have to have the w32time service running on your DC so that clients can update to it, but my question is how do I tell w32time to get its time from a serial port, instead of querying a server list or using a specific server? The GPS system does not have IP addresses to point to.

THe system we have installed can be found at

(their tech support "dept", is one man, and he is NO help at all)

My quandry is that I can disable the w32time service, and apparently it still gets its time from the serial port, but if I enable w32time, to serve the clients, it wants a SERVER to synch with. Can I point w32time to a serial port?

w2k clients use first W2k DC as a time source. First w2ks DC is the time source for not only the clients but for other DC's as well. Your NEW timeserver must be implemented according RFC868. If so, connect it to the first DC in your enterprise or configure your first DC to take time from the server where you installed those hardware/software. Then all your clients will automatically update the time from your new timeserver.

hope it will help you.

OK, I read RFC868..

Perhaps I didnt word my question correctly...

I cant get my PDC time via TCP or UDP, I cant set the PDC to get its time over a network at all.

The time-server we installed is not a PC, its providing time through a null modem cable connected to a serial port on the server.

The PDC time is correct and synched. (Im synching 3 networks, and the PDC time matches)

But, in order to serve time to clients, you MUST have w32time service running on the server. Right?

w23time wants to GET its time from an IP address. I need to configure w32time to NOT query time from ANYWHERE, and to ONLY serve time to client requests.

I already told w32time to query a list to internet servers to get its time, and now its still trying to do so.

In a nutshell, I need to leave the w32time service enabled to serve time to clients, but STOP w23time from getting its time from anywhere BUT the PDC.

Wow, I just realized...

Can I point w32time to the same server its running on?

And do I use the Internal or External IP address?

:)
I think you just answered on the question by yourself.
Point w32time to the same server it's running on. Use internal IP address. (actually, I think it doesn't matter what ip you will use, because both belongs to the same server. Maybe it will be useful to poit w32time to both ip's as well)

Hope you 'll get it to work.
