Setting Static E2T address on 3300

Does anyone have info about using a "Debug cable" to program a static E2T address on a 3300? The tech handbook mentions doing it, but doesn't give details to explain how. I know what the cable is but don't know how to use it. I have a 250-user 3300 that's being a little cantankerous about accepting a static E2T address and am almost at wit's end trying to get it done. Help appreciated.

Programming the E2T is easy. on the bottom of the 3300 on the right is a removable cap. Inside you will see the connector for the PS2 end of you debug cable. Connect up and use your terminal program to change. The settings are the same as the RTC. You can change the settings by doing the bootChange command or rebooting the pbx and wait for it to come up and stop the boot, just like the RTC. It does not boot right away, you may have to wait a few minutes. Other than that it is as per the handbook for the settings.

If you need more info, let me know

Simon

Thanks Simon. Sounds easy enough. Someone said Radios Hack had the cable (DB9 to PS2) so I'll check 'em out tomorrow. I'm unsure why, but trying to get the E2T to pick up its address by setting a reservation for it in the scope & setting option 66 & 67 just hasn't worked, and I swear I've followed every piece of documentation to the letter. MOL seems to have considerable documentation on the subject, some of it recent, suggesting I'm not the only one to have encountered a particarly stubborn machine. Wonder why they didn't take the step of documenting the Debug Cable better (beyond simply mentioning it in the Tech Handbook.) Apparently they want you to call Product Support (for some reason).

The debug cable is the same one that is used for the SS4000 tapi sets in case you have some around. In our company ever since we found about about the static E2T about 2.5 years ago we have been doing that. Found out from a buddy at tech support when we got a 3300 that had it's E2T hardcoded and product support wanted us to DOA the box.

When you tried the DHCP on the MITEL controller with option 66 and 67 set, did you make sure that you actually clicked on the enable DHCP option.
I remember having the same problem once and found that although I had all the settings, I never actually enabled the server. Also when you do enable the DHCP server try doing a DBMS save even if you have done so. I also found that sometimes enabling the DHCP doesn't actually work. The DBMS save command sort of kick starts the service. Failing all have you rebooted the controller after enabling the DHCP options? Off course if you have the E2T cable things are a lot simpler. NOTE. The reason why the E2T cable thing is not that well documented is cause in some countries it is illegal to use it. Just my five cents worth.

Thanks Eugene. Your post above looks like our white board notes of the exact steps we went through, including the DBMS save, rechecking that DHCP was enabled, etc. I'm anxious to try the debug cable as one of my coworkers is growing impatient, insisting we DOA the box. I'm not that quick to throw in the towel. However, I hit a wall today trying to find the cable. DB9 Female to miniature 8-pin DIN (PS2) male. Radios Hack had nothing, but tomorrow at lunch I'm going to hit one of the major computer stores (MicroCenter) and see what they have. If nothing else, see if they have an 8-pin mini-Din extension cable, whack the end off and make my own.

MitelPassion, where in the world would it be illegal to hardcode the E2T? and what are the charges?

Mitelinmyblood, I have some know how, email me at simonthetallguy At yahoo.ca

Mitelman, I could be wrong but I got this info from a MITEL traininer when I did my training. Also the actual deed of hardcoding the IP of the E2T in itself is not illegal however the way it is done is though. Anyway this is what was explained to me. Apparently it contravenes some FCC legistlation or some law. Again this is merely heresay as I never got official confirmation from MITEL themselves.
I am certainly not against it as I use one myself :-D
As far as the charges goes I don't know. I was told that it is illegal in the UK.

There's a lot of countries around the globe where the telecom regulatory agencies are not nearly as broad minded as here in the good old US of A. Lest we forget the modem era and "max retries" and "blacklisting". Quite possibly hard-coding the E2T is not in itself forbidden, but maybe it's only about the way it is achieved, having to pry open the box (figuratively speaking here since it's only a pop-off cap) and thereby violate some implied manufacturer's seal of certification.

Maybe it's illegal like telneting into the 3300. I remember tech support playing dumb about these things until they realised that I knew what I was talking about!

The actual reason for access being quoted as "illegal" is that the E2T access port was never put through regulatory approvals in the way that the other access connectors were.
Basically you can get your fingers inside the box, so it was never an "official" access point to the hardware. It was only intended for manufacturing/repair purposes and does not appear in the field manuals.

Thanks for clearing that up Mitelguru. Knew it had something to do with that ;-)

OK, I have the basics here, 8-pin mini-din male connector with a 24" pigtail of wire on it. Does anyone have the pin for pin relationships between the PS-2 connector and the DB9 ?

Thanks!!

I think the e2t card is meant to be a no go for the emc regs hear in uk,mitel have told us they dont officailly allow the cable to be sold, but we all know its a good thing to have.....we made our own.

OK, got the pinouts and made the cable today. It FIXED the problem. Thanks to all who provided guidance.
