Using: SSRS 2008 R2; SQL BIDS (which is basically VB.Net 2008).

Probably something completely obvious. Where do you set the Display Name of a report being deployed to a report server? I see the description field, but the report name (rptJobStatus) posted is the file name. I'd like to set an alias (Job Status by Division) that stays with the report and not have to set it every time I deploy to the server via the web interface.

Is there something I'm just completely overlooking here?

I always set the file name to the name I want displayed. I don't know of any way to do what you are asking.

Bummer. I suspected as much. Thanks for the feedback.

Yup - file name is what is displayed in report manager

Update...

I found a "work around" to the issue. When you deploy the report to the server, Create a "Create Linked Report..." with the alias name. Then hide the original. From that point on, you can update the original as often as required and the linked report will refresh with the new underlined version.

I'd rather have the ability to define an alias in the report itself, but this will at least save from having to rename the report after every update.

Pretty handy, I've never used the linked report feature before.

The "Linked Report" can have its own default values.

For example, we have multiple divisions so we have a folder for each division. I can then make one report with a Division parameter and put the Linked Report in each Division Folder with the division parameter default value defined. Then, Hide the parameter so the divisions can't pull up other division's information.

When you deploy an update to the source report, make sure the parameter is hidden and no default value is defined. The Links will maintain their defaults and settings and take on the updated source.

Key note: The link reports are bound by an internal ID. If you delete the source report, it breaks all the links and simply re-deploying the source file with the same name will NOT re-bind the Link Reports. New links will have to be created and configured.

Thanks for posting back - that's a real useful little tip
