I need to change the ip address for our modems in a router. I figured this wouldn't be too hard since I have some experience with the router - but I keep getting one of the two errors when attempting to make the change:

router(config)#interface Group-Async1
router(config-if)#ip address xx.xx.xx.x 255.255.255.192
xx.xx.xx.x overlaps with Ethernet0
router(config-if)#ip address xx.xx.xx.x 255.255.255.253
Bad mask 0xFFFFFFFD for address xx.xx.xx.x

The subnet mask for all of the machines on the network is 255.255.255.0.

Any ideas folks? Thanks in advance.

Without seeing the IP addresses that you are working with there is no way to tell if you addressing scheme is valid and it there trully is an overlap...

If it is correct and you are trying to supply a 255.255.255.253 subnet mask, then it will come back as invalid. The last legal subnet mask that can be used is 255.255.255.252 since you need at least 2 addresses for nodes. This is probably where the problem lies.

Thanks - I may have found another way around this....

Thanks for the input..
