Our group produces presentations on CD's that for a number of reasons could become outdated. Is it possible to script Director to look either at the viewer's computers clock, or perhaps log onto the web and check our servers clock for date information, and if expired, that is later than it should be for that CD, prompt the user for an update, or perhaps even email us to inform of the need of a current disk?

This is straight from the Director Help section refering to the date() system clock:

if char 1 to 4 of the date = "1/1/" then alert "Happy New Year!"

You should be able to modify this for your purposes.

What you could do is code your application to contact your server at regular intervals (with the user's consent) and on your server have some file which you can read and parse into director. Could be a simple text file, xml, list written to a text file etc.
