Setting brush stroke for pen tool?

I need to set a brush stroke for the pen tool when drawing but every time I draw a new segment the brush resets. whats the problem?

...check the appearance palette (window appearance) flyout menu...

...set 'new art has basic appearance' to off (no tick)...

...or click the icon bottom left of the appearance palette which does the same function...

...to add you can turn this off with no document open and this will thn be the default, so turn it off once illy has launched, quit then restart illy and it should honour the setting made, this is true for other functions you wish to have as a default..

thanks, also is there a way to see what you paint before you let go to the mouse button? i noticed it just shoes a smale dotted line for the paths and I was wondering if there was a brush setting that worked more like photoshop's brush.

...no, because it is a vector application it works very differently to how photoshop paints, in illy it needs to know the path before it creates the effect which is a two stage process with art brushes and pattern brushes, calligraphic brushes however behave differently because they are much simpler than a rough edge brush...
