I'm trying to add a new Brother HL-5250DN printer to our network where our ethernet segment on NT4 Server is 192.168.2.xxx with subnet 255.255.255.0 and we don't have DHCP enabled. The printer's ethernet jack lights up correctly and automatically assigns itself 169.254.206.5 with a 255.255.0.0 subnet and mentions APIP(which I understand NT4 does not have) on the setup report output. Obviously I need to access the printer and reassign an IP that falls within our segment. The printer instructions said to use a web browser to access the printer to make the change. However, when I try using IE6 on a W2K workstation, it won't find the 169.254.206.5 address and then when I try to ping it from the command prompt, it times out. Obviously, it is not finding it! How do I access a static IP address that is out of our static IP segment?

On most printers that I dealt with it's possiblr to change the IP thru the small LCD panel.

If that is not a case change the IP on your workstation to 169.254.206.7 255.255.0.0 or somesuch and change settings on the printer.
please note. as soon as you change the printer IP you loose connection from the workstation to it again.

I wonder why it's assigning itself that address - it's not a private scheme.

Anyway as suggested, change your own IP settings to be on the same subnet as the printer and then try again.
