Setting a varaible

I would like to know how to set a variable when running a report

I have a group footer band that on exit I would like to set a variable to use in the print when of the page footer fields I can not seem to get a variable to change value.
before report test = 0
on exit test = 1
check test on footer band it is still set to 0

any ideas for me to try

Is text a local variable? A variable must have Private or Public scope if you need to see it in a report.
