Hello-

Can I just open the correct ports on my firewall to allow a remote worker to use a nortel i2002 IP phone from home? If I change the IP address on the i2002 to the static ip of my office and forward those ports to the BCM50 shouldnt that work? If so what ports? Do I have to buy this license- Nortel BCM50 NAT Traversal for Remote Working? I would like to avoid that unless I have to. Thanks so much!

Either use a VPN or use the Remote Working configuration. Anything else will end up in headache especially if you start calling from the remote IP Phone to either a local IP Phone or another remote IP Phone. Remember that media (voice) packets normally flow directly from one IP Phone to another so both IP Phone need to be able to reach each other for two-way audio. Without VPN or Remote Working, that is going to require you to expose not just the BCM but those local IP Phones through your firewall.

Gwebster is correct. I've played with this on my test BCM 50 release 2 and I can register the IP phone fine, but can't raise dial tone and I get an alarm 50115 raised to do with Media.

TERM.(0007, :0001): No public media address available for IP set at 192.168.12.21:51014

Thanks for all the info. So has anyone set up- NAT Traversal for Remote Working. Do I just buy the keycode, install it etc? Is there more to it than that? What version of the BCM software does it need? Thanks,

My BCM is still on version 1. Via the threads I read there is no easy way to go from 1 to 6 and it will probably be expensive. Wonder if its time to start looking at a new system or hosted solution. What do you think (hosted or system) and do you have any recommendations. We are a small company with 8 headsets in the office and 2 remote workers. Thanks again!

You would need two upgrades from 1 to 3 to 6.

This is a useful guide in the UK for prices at

Look at the bottom for two licences and prices that this firm is charging.

Look at an eMetroTel. It's a smokin machine! All of that stuff comes with it and you can use your existing Nortel phones exactly as you do today.

Well maybe I should explain why the UCx is much easier to use than the BCM remote worker.

So you want a remote user or two or three.....????

First obtain i2xxx (all 3 generations will work), 11xx and 12xx Unistim IP sets.
Secondly obtain your ISP external IP address
Thirdly, type your external IP address into the Emetrotel UCx GUI under Nortel settings
Fourth, go into the Unistim phone's configuration and set the IP address to read back to the external IP address of the UCx
Fifth, install your phones at remote locations and at 98 percent of all locations I've tried, the phones have come up and stayed logged in indefinitely.

It's that simple, no VLAN's or special keycode licenses required. This feature comes built it in with the main feature package of the UCx.

Downside, I did have trouble at a Marriott Hotel with their firewall.....Static IP addresses cause havoc too because everyone has to re enter the new IP address if my ISP goes down.

I do have multiple Unistim phones set up at:
My Mom and Dad's in Indiana 30 miles from me in Chicago
A friend a few blocks away in Chicago
My friends warehouse 14 miles away in Melrose Park
A friend in Prague (Europe)
And my sisters office 24 miles away

I think it's great, it's like my own little Centrex network :)

The only downside I can see if that it's not possible to use the analogue trunks. I have two. one for my home and the other for my business and I didn't think that the UCx could be used as they only support SIP trunking.

Hi Firebirdscrambler, I believe there is a way to use analogue trunks via a media gateway switch. I'll ask around and let you know.

Would you think about porting your numbers over to SIP trunking?

I have a BCM as well at home with both Analogue and SIP trunking....I've tested both and the sound quality is superior on the SIP trunking.....the Analogue sounds much quieter and there are a lot of Central Office clicks associated with it....first when you answer the line and when you press RLS....its so seamless with SIP and the same is true for PRI. Yes, the downside, when the power goes out, you don't have much of an option....that's why I kept one analogue line (on my BCM) for safety, but I don't use it at all.

Joe

E=MetroTel uses the Mediatrix 1204 4 port FXO gateway to accommodate analog trunks. You can use others but that's the one they sell when you buy analog trunk support from them.

I've asked them about using the 4 trunk ports on the digital gateway (converted BCM50 box) but they said that so far no one has actually asked them to do it........so if more people ask, who knows!

SIP trunks are the way to go on this box though. They work great and cheap as hell from suppliers like voip.ms. Takes about 15 minutes to set everything up.

Thanks Telcodog and Joe for your input. It would be nice to retain as much of the BCM functions such as the Analogue Trunks, Extension ports on the BCM 50. If that was the case, then I'd be very interested.

Having everything all in the one unit is easier to maintain.

If you convert the BCM50 to a gateway, you get access to the 12 digital stations and the 4 analog station ports on it. The only pain are those analog trunks. I'll keep on them about activating them because those 1204 units are not cheap.

UCx works with many 3rd party gateways, so for 2 analog trunks, you could use for example Audiocodes MP112 (about $150).

That said, if you have a reasonably stable Internet connection (even ADSL 1024/512 should be fine for 2 trunks), using a SIP trunk from someone like voip.ms ( could be a better choice - it would likely take pretty long time before you spend $150 with them. :)
