I there anything special that needs to be done inorder to have isa forward mail to exchange. Currently we have our mail server and isa server on the same machine. I would like to move the mail to another machine behind the firewall. I understand that the mx recored will need to point to the isa server and then just have it forward mail to an internal ip address. But for outgoing messages will i have to install the firewall client on the mail server or is there some other config that must be made to send outgoing mail(internet mail Connector)?

When you move your exchange server to a machine behind the firewall, click on Publishing then right click on Server publishing and select Secure mail server. ISA will then run a mail server publishing wizard. It is pretty simple it will ask you for your external IP of the ISA server and the internet address of the mail server. If you set the default gateway on the Exchange Server to the internal ip address of ISA server, there shouldnt be a need to install the firewall client.
Also check to make sure you dont have protocol rules and packet filters blocking SMTP and DNS traffic on the ISA server.
If you have any problems just ask. This should work though as that is how I have set up my exchange server

Finding this post was great, as I have been wondering how this would work once I got ISA up and running. So I am wondering if before I go ahead with the solution you suggest if I need to publish another SMTP to ISA server, as you mention not to filter SMTP or DNS. I ask because when I run the ISA wizard to publish my Exchange Server the outbound SMTP option is grayed out and does not allow me to select it with a check box. Additionally, I ask because I have my Exchange Server behind ISA on my internal network and the Exchange Virtual SMTP is the only SMTP I currently have running, I do not have an SMTP setup on the ISA server itself either. Additionally my Exchange Server is located on my DNS / AD machine. Can you recommend a configuration that will work to allow Exchange to correctly resolve external mail addresses?

The only way around i suggest is to put the exchange server on the same machine as ISA. I am downloading ISA SP1 right now to see if it will fix the problem. I will let you know

Yesterday i installed Service Pack 1 for ISA. The ISA machine has been running over 24 hours since i installed the service pack. So far it has been working. Microsoft have appeared to fix this problem.

Publishing the exchange server which runs as GC+AD+ISA+Exc2K what kind of ports is it going to open ? Only the ports shown at the Protocol Rulse + IP Packet filter or the ports needed by Exchange RPC ... + ports shown

In addition does exchange RPC fulfills the SMPT and DNS needs ?

Thanx
