Set up a Network Printer

I have a Tally line printer with an internal 10 BaseT Ethernet Card. I have used arp -s to install a local IP address, but I can not seem to ping this printer no matter what I do. Can anyone help? It seems as though my network does not even recognize that the printer exists. Is there any way "off the network" to test the Ethernet card itself? I want to connect using TCP/IP.

I realize that you said you created a local IP address, but let me clarify a question I have...

Is the IP address on the server or printer ?

The only way the printer will respond to a ping is if it is running some sort of an IP stack. I question that it even is. You would have needed to connect to the printer, define an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

Your best bet is to put is on a HP Jet-Direct print server. Intel also makes them.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the Hint, I spoke with the folks at Tally, and using a printserver utility, I was able to set an IP address and Gateway/Subnet directly into the printer. I can now see the printer (and ping) on my local network. My next question, is How do I CONFIGURE the printer as a network printer in SCO UNIX, I'm confused on the steps. I have inserted the ip address and name in the /etc/hosts file but I'm lost from here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Go into "scoadmin" or "custom". From there I'm lost because it has been a long time since I admin'd a SCO box.
