I'm still exploring all of the feature of MYSQL and I'm wondering what the SET type is used for? Can it be a replacement for an array?

Not really.

An array differs from a set in one important feature -- an array imposes an order on the element values. For example, and array will say that the value of element 1 is 3, the value of element 2 is 5, etc.

A set is just a cloud of values.

Think of a set as a group of switches that describe which of a group of attributes apply to a particular record.
