Why do I have to set -o emacs and press Ctrl+V in order to get the Version of the Korn shell?

The reason you have to do a set -o emacs and then a CTRL +V is the CTRL +V option for emacs is designed to display the version information associated with the shell in question.

The other option is to do a uname -a

This will list the host name and version of the OS among other things. The manual pages will give you all the details for the various switches that can be used.

Simply do a man uname.

I hope this helps.
