If I use sessions - and the user suddenly decides to close the browser so that my instrcutions to stop the session with session_destroy() is never executed... then what? How will it be deleted from the server?????

PHP has a configuration named session.getmaxlifetime or something like it.

For default it uses a value of 1440 seconds = 30 minutes.

When a session doesn't change in the last 30 minutes the server removes it.

The script for removing sessions is also settable. For default it runs 1 time in 100.
