Services problem

I am unable to start or stop services. I am logged in to the computer admin account but when right clicking a service all of the start / stop options are greyed out. I can double click to choose automatic, manual or disable but thats it. I just bought a copy of Diskeeper and cannot install it as it fails during install when it tries to start a couple of services as well as adding it's own. Does anyone have any idea how to sort this problem as it is driving me mad.
