Though there is a registry option to 'run as service' (when windows starts up - though don't know how this differs from just running tha app at startup. But for example, remote administrator (remote control app I use) will set entry to do this if you select the install as service option when its installed in 98).
The idea behind 'run as service' was, if I recall right, to have certain small 'apps' startup without any icons in systray or taskbar.
It was something similar to the old DOS TSR idea.
