I have recently re-installed my version of Windows XP on my home PC.

Previously i have never had problems with "Automatic Updates" but it appears that there is something amiss now.

When going to the MS Windows Update page, after my system is checked, I am informed that my Update services have note started, and I am told how to remedy this - by running "services.msc" and changing some settings.

This done, all works well. However, the settings I change do not appear to save, and therefore I have to keep running through this short routine of changing settings in order to have MS update whatever needs updating.

how can I ensure that settings changed in services.msc are retained - or what might be changing them behind my back?

Thanks

Its worth a try to:
Start > Run > sfc /scannow

It will ask for the XP disc.

It's possible the Update service has been set to Manual startup, which means if you can click Start to start it, but after a reboot it's not running. Right click it, go into properties, and set it to Automatic startup.

If it still doesn't start up properly, look in the Event Log for problems during XP startups. It should have an entry if a service fails to start.

Have you installed SP2 yet?

The Security Center (a SP2 thing) will alert you if Automatic Updates is not running, if you so configure it.

See Line 30, left column for the saving settings issue.

Is there any Group Policy set preventing you from saving your settings?
