Service provider and PPTP

Does my service provider need to support PPTP protocol in order to use VPN?
I have set up everything correctly as far as I know - but cannot get a connection.

I did talk to them - and they don't support PPTP - I have a ADSL PPPoE connection. Does this mean I can't use VPN?
