I have an older server (4.11 sp 4) that is refusing to take a new tape drive or accept new backup software.

Before I can load the service pack however I want to backup up the server as best I can over the network, as I have no backup tape.

Can anyone suggest a strategy and a sequence of steps to most securely backup the server?

If you have another server, you might copy all the files to the other server. We ran into this same situation. Added a cheap IDE drive to another existing server and copied the problem server to it. If you don't have another server, put the hard drive in the problem server. You can get 30 gig IDE drives for about $150. It's cheap insurance and you can use the drive for something else later.

I don't think ghost is an option.

I would appreciate a list of the parts of the server to backup, can I export the schema etc.. to a file on the system to back it up???

What are some of the issues with the server not taking a new tape drive or backup software?
