When attempting to view any of my reports using Crystal Enterprise 10 i get the following error message in my browser:

"There was an error retrieving data from the server: Service was not found".

This error is generated for all reports including the sample reports that come with Enterprise.

I hope someone has experienced this error/can help?!

sounds like you are not connecting to the db server, however that would be odd for ALL your reports (assuming some are seeking different databases).
Unless this is a new install of CE - in which case I would ask if you have set up the necessary connection information on the ce server.
eg - I develop reports on my workstation mostly connecting to oracle dbs via odbc connections, so that means I need to have the same connection information on my pc and on the CE server 1. tnsnames.ora and 2. a connection configured with the correct driver and connection name (in ms odbc manager).
Do you know if you have established connections to the various db's that you are trying to access?

All reports are actualling reporting on the same database which is MySQL via ODBC. I have checked the connection information and it matches that of my desktop machine where, like yourself, I develop reports.

The error occurs when I try to run all reports, including those found in "Report Samples - Feature Examples" which I assume are samples that are bundled with CE. Therefore, I assume my problem lies with the CE server not with any particular report or database.

Also, yes, it is a new install of CE, but upon installation it was working fine. This is a recent problem but I have not changed anything with CE!

Thanks for the help so far

Hi,
Is the DSN name the same on the CE machine as on your desktop. Can you connect from the CE machine ( maybe using CR Designer) using that DSN?

The samples are in a different database (Xtreme Sample Database 10) so check the location/account info for those ( assuming you installed them).

Are all the CE services running and enabled?

Hi,

I have checked the DSN name on the desktop and CE machine and they match. I have also used Crystal Reports to preview reports on both machines and this works fine.

The sample database is installed and also has the same location/account information on the desktop and CE machine.

According to the Crystal Configuration Manager on the CE machine, all services are running.

Are you able to run the reports on demand from CE ie via the VIEW button ? Also, can you run the report via SCHEDULE ? Do you get the same error message through both of these paths ?

ShortyA

I get the same error when either using VIEW and by creating an instance using SCHEDULE and then attempting to view the instance

Does the SCHEDULED instance run successfully ? If yes, does it only bring up the error message when you try to view the saved instance ?

For all of the tests are you using the Report Samples that you tested via Crystal Reports earlier on the CE server ?

Out of interest, are you able to view any saved instances from reports that ran before this problem appeared ?

Yes the SCHEDULED instance runs successfully and the error only occurs at the point of viewing the saved instance.

I am testing by attempting to run the Report Samples and my own reports, including reports that used to run ok.

Sadly we do not schedule reports and so there are no saved instances from before the problems started

Try signing in to the EPortfolio frontend with the Administrator logonid. Then run one of the report samples both as VIEW and via SCHEDULE. Do you still get the same error messages ? This is just to test that the issue is not related to the security change on CE.

If the problem is still occuring then I believe that the Cache and/or Page Servers on CE are the problem. On the CE server have a look at the Event Viewer (Start Menu/RUN and then input EVENTVWR). Look at the system and application logs around the time that you have just run the reports and see if there are any warnings or errors.

One final query..do you have the same problem on your test/development CE server ?
ShortyA

Logging on as Administrator makes no difference, still the same errors.

The Event Viewer shows no warnings or errors related to running CE reports.

We dont have a test/development server just one install of CE.

Hi,
It sounds like the report viewer may not be correctly set up..Check the virtual directories in the IIS on the CE server and be sure it points to the correct location for the viewers.
Are you trying to view in CR format or some other type ( like PDF ).

I am trying to view in CR format.

Apologies but I know little about IIS, could you please advise how to check the virtual directories as you state?

Thanks
Paul

Hi,
On the server where you installed CE ( I am assuming a Windows server) the Web server ( IIS) will have a control panel entry ( try Internet Services) and , under the default web site, there are several virtual directories - the 2 involving CE are /Crystal and /Viewers ..

Be sure they point to a valid location ( see the CE Install guide for specifics as to where they should be.)

Thanks,

OK I have checked the virtual paths as follows:

/crystal points to a valid location. I removed the mapping and could not access the desktop launchpad and then replaced it and could access the launchpad.

/crystalreportviewers10 points to a valid location. I tested this by attempting to download the offline viewer (cvwsetup.exe) and I can with the mapping in place and cant without it, confirming that the mapping is correct.

So sadly I am no nearer! But this narrows it down a little, we know CE can find all the files and applications it needs to server web pages, including the "Service was not found" error page, but it just cant view the reports.

I have some more information about my problem:

I get different errors with different report viewers selected in Crystal Reports Preferences:

ActiveX and Java viewers work ok
DHTML viewer produces the "Service was not found" error
Advanced DHTML viewer produces "Server can't create object" error

I have now resolved my issue.

The problem was with "WebReporting.dll" not being correctly registered and was fixed using the regsvr32 tool.
