Hi there!
I've taken a deeper look at the Service Navigator and its methods to store data.
Is it true, that the status of nodes, services, etc. isn't stored anywhere but calculated on demand, based on the events and the rules given in XML files?
Is the service tree stored in XML files or is this information also available somewhere in the database?

Thanx in advance
Christoph

Hi there Cristoph, the service tree is located on the scripts where you can customize everything regarding (don't exaclty remember if the scripts are xml files right now, sorry about that).

And yes, you are right, the status is calculated on demand according to the scheme defined on the scripts, but making use of the events loaded on VPO's database.

It is pretty easy to modify the scripts required to build your services tree, Service Navigator already comes with a few examples regarding several enviroments, but the fun of it is defining the perfect tree for you enterprise + internal and external services you are providing, you are going to love this tool...

Hope this helps,

vlan52,
it definitely helps, but i guess it's no fun to do it (luckily i won't do it). The scope of application is about >1000 servers running multiple applications and databases.
My project is more like building something on top of the Service Navigator, so my problem is how to get a more or less complete snapshot of the status of all components in the IT infrastructure.
As far as i can see this results in imitating Service Navigator's way of calculating status. That is for sure no fun (if possible somehow)

So, another related question:
I guess, it's not possible to view any historical data within the Service Navigator (as it conflicts with the goal of it).
Are there any OpenView modules which can give me a combination of the hierarchical service view and historical (trend-analysis, etc.) data?
Or do you know any 3rd party tools, that can supply this?

Thanks Christoph, and guess you are right the task you have been assigned doesn't sound like fun, uh?, but here is a tip...

Regarding the hierarchical service tree + historical, keep in mind that in order for Service Navigator to show the propert status of any object under VPO, you must define on every template you need (VPO's template for distribution, etc...) a "tag" under the "Service Name" field which matches a name service defined on your xml scripts...pretty bad...

But, once there, and for your main purpose of getting a snapshot of the status of your components/objects, you may "query" your VPO database looking for either services or just the history message table...if you want an easy way to do it and generate html reports out of it, go for the Service Reporter "tool", from HP, it works pretty good actually.

Best regards Christoph,

vlan52,
when i use the Service Reporter, i can't get any structural data as provided by the Service trees!?
As far as i've seen, the Reporter only provides a very flat view on my IT. It can do neat little diagrams about different metrics, but it's not possible to get any information about how the services, metrics, etc. work together. Or am i wrong here?
How (if not writing an own custom tool) can i get such views?

Thanx
Christoph

Hi Cristoph, since Service Reporter uses Crystal reports to gather info from the database, I suspect you may be able to write any query using Crystal reports that would bring you info (something to make graphs with)about metrics, services, etc...
