Service IP on different VLANs

I am planning to build HACMP clusters with 2 LPARs and want to make sure that I have the right config in regards to IP addresses.

Please confirm if I am on the right track here.

1) Boot IP and Standby IP need to be on different subnets.
2) It is recommended/better (if possible) to put Service IP on different VLANs.

I have some arguments about putting Service IP on different VLANs, but, thinking of network redundancy, I think different VLANs are needed.
Any ides/inputs on this and what needs to be done for putting Service IP on different VLANs?

Thx much

Hi gatetec,

Thanks for the nice question! As long as i'm familiar with! All of the IPs needs to be on the same VLAN (different subnets!)

For IP takeover via replacement you don't have to have the service IP on a different subnet than one of the boots but on IP takeover via aliasing you need to do that!

I've seen some people lately posting in this forum that they use a different VLAN for the service IP address so this might be possible! but to my understanding the service IP address will have to be aliased (considering IPAT via aliasing) to one of the adapters (assuming two adapters one for boot and the other standby) so it has to have the same default gateway as the adapter in place otherwise how would clients communicate with it?

I'm not trying to throw Question on a Question but in our clusters at work, all of our IPs are on the same VLANs (whether service, standby, or boot) and they are working fine!

Regards,
Khalid
