We have a Server 2003 server with Informix on it and about 2 hours ago the database seemed to stop responding. We couldn't restart the Informix services in Admin tools -> services so we restarted the server.
On restart the database did not come up. Again when trying to stop the services, the service control times out. We then tried to stop other services and they do the same. We also can't change the properties of the services to manual startup and the such like (services just hangs). Changing things in MSCONFIG resulted in it hanging when OK was pressed aswell.

Has Windows services become corrupt in some way? Has anyone seen anything like this before? Help please, I need to get this working again ASAP!!

What errors are coming up in your event logs? Post them up here so we can help you troubleshoot.

TOM1681 -

I have the same exact problem on my Windows 2000 server. You are now the 3rd person I have seen reporting this same exact issue. All of a sudden all Server Services are unresponsive in the sense that you cannot Stop/Start them. There is no Error reported in the Event Viewer pointing to any kind of problem. YOu just receive this error message: "error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." after you try start/stop a service.

I cannot figure out what is causing this. Also, if you try to install any kind of program including reinstalling a Service Pack, Windows Installer just hangs with no error message. I'm so frustruated!!! Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,

Keven

Thanks for the reply. There is not actually any PowerChute software installed on this server.

I can't figure out what is causing the problem. All services are unresponsive and Windows Installer just hangs on any type of install.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Keven

Nope - No further ideas. Since the July 27th date for the APC issue, any restart goofiness and system service hangs showing up out of the blue are immediately suspect for this.

Sorry - Go nuthin' further at the moment...

My issue has been resolved!!!

Here is what I found. Please read this article (See Hyper-Link Below). After disabling the "Remote Storage" service, everything became instantly functional. I disabled my Tape Drive Device first, then Right-Click on the Remote Storage service and Change it to "Disable"

After doing so the "Network Connections Service", "Telephony Service", Remote Access Connections Manager Service", "DCOM Service" immediately started up. I am now able to Start/Stop services and Windows Installer is now Functioning. I Hope this helps you. Please let me know if it does.

Yes! We had APC software installed! Unbelievable that they've distributed software that will expire with such serious conseqeunces. We realised this was the problem when another server did the same thing.

Cheers for the update link!
