Every time I boot my NT4 sp6a machine I get a dialog message entitled: Service Control Manager. The message states, "At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.

When I view the Event Viewer there is not any information that seems to be pertinent to the Service Control Manager. Hence I can't figure out how keep the dialog box from popping up evertime I boot.

Does anyone have any ideas or troubleshooting methods that may help me figure this thing out? Is there another way (other than Event Viewer) of figuring out what the dialog box is referring to?

I apologize for asking, but did you check all Event Viewer windows (there are 3: Application, Security, System). You should look into Application and System.

Also, (from the MS KB) this behavior can occur if a driver does not start correctly but does not report errors to the Event Log service.

One driver that exhibits this behavior is the UMAX scanner driver (UMAXDRV). If the scanner is turned off, the driver does not load, which causes the error message. However, the driver does not report the failure to the Event Log service.

Check Q172195 article.

Hope it helps.

You can also check your services in the control panel to make sure that all the ones set to start automatically are started this will tell you whether it is a service or a driver issue.

Hey ALBAO:

This is the information from Microsoft website. I had same problem couple of weeks i fixed it, read the following information should solve your problem.

Service Control Manager Event 7024 (2270)

SYMPTOMS
During the startup process, you may see the following error message:

At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use Event Viewer to examine the event log for details.
Event Viewer shows Service Control Manager event number 7024. This is described as: "The Messenger service terminated with service-specific error 2270."

Further information is available by using the net helpmsg command. Error message 2270 is described as:
The computer name could not be added as a message alias. The name may already exist on the network.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the computer's name is not unique on the network. Sometimes a computer will be given a name that is also a user name.

The Messenger service functions by listening to the network for messages that are directed to a set of aliases. The list of aliases consists of the computer name, the user name of the current user, and any aliases that are added by using the net name command. If there are no users logged on, the only alias that Messenger can listen to is the computer name. Therefore, Messenger always expects to be able to add the computer name, during the startup process, as an alias to listen to. If this name already exists on the network (because it was added on another computer), Messenger is unsuccessful in adding that name, and does not start.
