Can someone lead me to some information on planning a server structure for domino. We are currently running Domino 5 and I think our current design is overkill. We have about 500 clients that access the servers. We run both Mail and custom notes apps. Currently we have 10 domino servers running. 1 Hub servers, 2 internal mail servers, 1 smtp mail gateway server and 6 DB/App servers. The original design was based on Domino 4.5 due to database size limitation. Just looking for input on the best way to cut down on the amount of servers, but still maintain the highest performance?

Hello,

We have 400 users on 1 Domino R6 Cluster (2 Servers, 200 users on each). Mostly mail and no performance issues. I would look into consolidating your servers, but plan it with patience.

Monitor each box and check the load on each. Maybe look into clustering your mail and apps into two clusters (2-3 servers each).

I always recommend a cluster over 250 users. They are very simple to build and maintain, but that all depends on staffing and physical locations (among other things). Just an idea, hope this helps.

Rgds,

John

10 servers for 500 clients ! Well, for sure you can go to a 2-server cluster for mail, and another 2-server cluster for apps. That can cut out six servers without any hassle.
For 500 users, a 2-server cluster is more than enough for mail, and should be about right for apps.
Upgrade to R6.5.1 and drop the six useless servers and you will get serious maintenance economies and less administrative hassle.
You might put in some thought on using only one app server - that would depend on general Domino server usage statistics. Of course, a cluster means better response times and less downtime for the user, which in turn means less remarks from management.
If either cluster starts showing signs of strain, you can always add another server in the cluster afterwards.

Pascal.
