HI!
I have the following problem: several hours after starting a server hangs itself. That means it works properly (users can log in etc) but everything with I want to do directly on server I have to do via remote console> And I don't know at all why console hands itself constantly...

what are you trying to do at the server

i can really see an issue with this - afraid i am from the school of thoughyt where you shouldnt be touching the server console anyway unless you are building it - everything should be remote

why are you restrating the server ?

In theory if the server console hangs, using a Remote tool to access the server console won't help as it still accesses the same console session (unless you get an emergency console up).

The console will not hang for no reason, usually it can hang if someone tries to unload an NLM manually and it gets stuck unloading the NLM and hangs the console. Have you got console logging enabled? If not, it may be worth enabling it to see if anyone is doing anything on the console. It may also be worth enabling console logging just in case there are any errors displayed on the console that you are missing.

No anyone besides me haven't access to the server. I just happend during the night, one day everything was OK and day after console was hand. I have feeling that is caused by back up. I don't know exackly what, may streamer or its configuration is bad.
I don't know what it menas, but all leds on The keyboard flash at the same time...

In that case, I would agree with Marv. You could be looking at an issue with the keyboard or KVM switch, or it could even be a hardware issue with your server. What you could do is remove the KVM from the equation by plugging another keyboard into the server and seeing if the problem is resolved.

I've seen KVMs do this before. On the other hand, a bad BIOS on the server could do that, too. Good luck.

so let's get this rights

the server is still all well and working except if you physically go to the server then all the led flash and you can do anything on it?

yes, server works properly, but everything witch I want to do on server's console I have to do on remote machine.
OK but why console works fine directly after restarting server? And then after some time it hangs?

it's either a knackered kvm or keyboard or does it have a rilo or any other kind of remote access board to it

old hp's if you go over the rilo would flash the keyb and also display a blue light and you couldnt do anything at keyboard as it was redirected however rebooting the server would not relinquish this

i wouldnt restart the server though - this is an alien concept - they shouldnt be rebooted

i have olso 2 diffrent problems, but I don't want to set up a new topic:)
each time when I set server's time it's delay about 10 minutes a day. why?
To making back up I use sbcon tool. when back up is finished and I want to change label of a tape I receive following message:
"{SMSDI v1.0 273} An invalid destinaion location was specified
<pres ENTER to continue"
If I reload NWTAPE everything is OK

Each time you set servers time? Why are you doing that? Why don't you sync your server to an external time source and never have to think about it again?

SBCON, forget it. Why don't you invest a few hundred bucks and get a real backup solution. Even BackupExec would work better than SBCON. SBCON will backup your server, but it's not a good backup solution.

bacuase I don't know how to use external sync:( but it isn't normal when server's clock constantly doesn't keep proper time

no that definately aint normal - well the bios will drift a bit but you shouldnt be setting it - this is suicidal
sythethic time is not a good thing to mess with

set an external time - there is lots of tids on it - and it aint hard
just search for ntp on novell site

It's not normal for a clock to keep the wrong time, BUT I have seen cases where it drifts very quickly. A lot depends on the BIOS and chip manufacturer.

The thing is, I havne't thought about that problem for years. If you just set to sync external, you don't have to worry about it.

Check out this TID. It covers it nicely:
