I know this is the Win XP forum, but it does it on my pentium 3 win xp machines. I just installed all new gig-a-bit NIC and popin a new 25port gig-a-bit stwich..to replace the broken several ports not working 25port hub (smart move huh) anyway on my P III macines..a HD back-up and the server it's self) the gig-a-bit lan will not go higher then 100...but it should be connecting at 1000..it's not the ports or cables I tested emm out with a laptop and it ran at 1000 on the same port same cable. WTF is going on...does the voltage of the old P III boards prevent gig-a-bit lan from working?

Are you sure that you are using at least CAT5e cable??

This is the std for GB com....some may work without & others be more finicky.

rvnguy reread my post. I said I used the same cable and the same port with a pc that did have gig-a-bit and is worked fine.

Try setting rate manually to see if this changes connection speed.

ControlPanel > network connection > select rclick > properties > advanced > linkspeed/duplex mode > see what options other than auto are available....if no 1000 is available
recheck driver insure that it is a GB driver or possibly MS has made a poor choice etc.

I did read your post. even though the cable did work on one nic (laptop) is not insurance that a more finicky nic will bot like it. But then you have coved this with a cat5e cable.

BTW...what are the nic's mfg & mdl for the PIII's
