I posted this before with no response, trying again. We are upgrading from a Compaq Proliant 1600/600 server to a Dell Poweredge 4600 over the July 4th weekend. Old server will be retired so we will use it's Win 2000 Server/CAL licenses. Server is not a domain server, is used as a terminal services application server and a terminal license server for a single accounting application and database. Tape backup will be moved from the old to the new server. We need the users and licensing information to transfer. Is BACKUP and RESTORE the best way to go?
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Disaster Recovery Guidelines White Paper recommends against using restore for copying system from one computer to another and says to use the distribution media to perform an upgrade. I'm not sure how I would then restore the users and terminal server license information.
As an alternative I could reregister the new server as the terminal license server. Will the Microsoft registration program allow this? Thanks.
