I was bringing a new 2003 std server online to replace the 2000 server that was the domain controller for one of our locations. The new server was dcpromo'd a little while back and everything seemed fine. Prior to the dcpromo I made sure to run adprep and that seemed to go well. The problems started when I tried to move the fsmo roles to the new server. I tranferred rid, and pdc roles to the new server and everything seemed OK until I looked in active directory from the old server and it showed errors for the role owner for the rid and pdc.

This is when the problems started. I tried to move the roles back to the old server and dcpromo the new server to demote it. This would not work. I tried several different times and then noticed that the new server did not seem to be working correctly. the dcpromo would not work so I deciced to seize the roles back to the old server.

I am not sure what to do about this situation. with the new server being down now, I am wondering what the best method would be to get rid of the new server from active directory system?

Since I did seize the roles from the new server, can I bring the server online to force a dcpromo?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated... I would like to know what the best way to get this new server removed from the system would be... At that point I would rebuild the server with a new name and try again at a later time.

thanks..
