Any help welcome thanks in advance :)

I help a charity with IT support for free and they required a software upgrade Server 2000 to 2003 / Exchange 2000 to 2003. They have about 50 users.

Server 1 Win 2000 Server OS : This server handles DCHP, DNS and some database apzs. This server is staying the same

Server 2 being upgraded to 2003 OS and Exchange 2003 is currently running
Win 2000 Server OS : This server handles Exchange which is currently 2000 ver.

Both Servers have Active Directory install on them

1) I was going to Exmerge the data out of exchange then back them up on server one

2) Dcpromo the server to remove it from AD. This is where I’m worrying as I would like to rename the new 2003 box the same name as the current 2000 box to save running round and updating the mail setting in outlook. Will dcpromo totally remove all ref to the old server name? or will I have to do something else to ensure AD will not grumble at same name when I promo the 2003 box?

Any other advice would be welcome

check and remove all references to server name in DNS...

couldn't you do an inplace upgrade instead???
