Server to Engineer Ratio

I know there is no magic number for this but, What is your current server to engineer ratio?

1. How diverse is your environment?
2. How many total servers do you have?
3. What industry are you apart of?
4. How many server engineers do you have supporting your servers?

This is the perennial "loaded question" Tamra and like you said it depends on a few factors like;

- Type of OS being managed
- Are the OSses virtualized or on dedicated hardware
- Are they all running the same set of apps/tools
- Are your server admins only managing the OS, but are they managing hardware, network, SAN connections etc.
- Is this a 24/7 operation

I was a server admin for an outsourcer and managed both Windows and Linux servers. When I first started working for them it was like 40:1 nowadays don't be surprised if you see 100:1 and even higher

I realize that. I was just trying to get a feel for other environments. I have a very diverse, completely non-standardized environment with almost 4000 windows servers and about 500 linux boxes. I was merely trying to get a feel for what others were doing.

I run a one man shop. We have Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and used to have Netware. I have 7 servers and 350 workstations. We are state government, and I have one engineer, me. I also do database programming, but it's not my strength.
