Hi,

my company wants to replace a server running Windows 2003 that is joined to a domain. my question is: Can we replace that server with a new server using the same IP address and server name as the old server?

The idea is to disconnect the old server from the domain and joined the new one to the domain using the same name and IP address. Will that cause any trouble or do I have to do something else before I can do it?

Thanks,
Hang

If its a member server it wont be that big of a deal, if its a DC you will have some other things to think about.

Just after the removal of the 2003 box, make sure the computer account is deleted and replicated throughout your AD. Then add the new server/same name and IP. I believe in AD you can just reset the computer account and it will allow you to reuse the name without deletion...but that can be a test for another time.

Thanks guys,

I'll let my co-workers know about your comments.

Also, how would I switch the servers if the old server was a Domain Controller? Is there a process I need to follow?

Thanks,

asked and answered here in many other posts.

You need to consider the tasks involved in decomissioning of the old DC, and the replication of all related data to the new DC. Generally, it's not a good idea for a DC to be an application server for security reasons. You'd be better off splitting those apart.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

As long as it is not holding FSMO roles or other needed networking services; just run dcpromo to demote it. Once it reboots into a member server, then treat it as a member server swap.

thanks guys,

all good info to know.
