How is a "Linux oriented CGI script" different from a regular CGI script?

Sorry for the newbie question but I was going to install an active server page containing server-side VBscript and the web hoster said they do not have the software installed to handle this type of page.

They are saying they are a Linux only shop but can handle Linux oriented CGI scripts. So I'm confused.

ASP and VBscript are MicroSoft/Windows dependent. You can do all the same stuff in the Unix/Linux world with C, C++, Java, javascript, PHP, perlscript, Perl, and (what have I left out? probably several). Depending on what you want done, you could likely use PHP to recreate your ASP functionality and javaScript to recreate your VBscript stuff. You will have to rewrite. I'm am sure that is bad news. OR, find a host that is running M$ servers. Your predicatment is exactly why I have drifted away from the M$ way of life and completely into Perl and javascript.

Good Luck

You left out TCL, python and shell scripts. I'm sure I've forgotten something too.

I used to work for an ISP up in the Washington DC area. They were a linux shop, and flatly refused to support VBScript, ASP or Frontpage. My boss was an MS-phobe (although we still had to use MS Word - it was a government standard).

I used to be an MS-phobe too, but Netscape has turned me away from them, and now I like IE much better (better even than NS 6.1). I also find that I rather like most of the MS Office tools. I still don't like MS's attitude, but their software isn't all bad.
